Scene 1

AT RISE: A small diner named Trader Vic’s on the west side of Hillsborough. SAM comes in to get an order of fries and sees PARKER. He is wearing headphones in a booth by himself, drinking a milkshake. SAM briefly glances at PARKER and finally decides to go talk to him.

SAM

Hi, m—my name is, um, Sam, I don’t know if you know who I am, but I’m in your grade. Can I sit here?

(PARKER takes off his head phones)

PARKER
Yeah!

 SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS

I can’t believe he’s actually letting you sit with him.

SAM

Thanks! So, I’ve seen you around school but can’t quite figure out your name.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
That’s a lie, you actually know all about Parker.

PARKER
Oh, it’s Parker.

SAM
Parker?
(Pause)

Oh cool! So, Parker, Trader’s is kind of far from school. Do you live near here?

PARKER
Yeah, about five minutes away. Actually I come here to get away from my stepdad.

SAM
Same here! Ever since my mom met her terrible excuse of a boyfriend, it’s like she doesn’t have a backbone anymore. She’s afraid to speak up anymore. It’s like he’s controlling our life.

PARKER
Yeah, my mom’s the same way. Every time my dad starts yelling at me, she just sits there. I think she’s scared of him. I’d be too if I were her.

(SAM and PARKER look around a bit in silence.)

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
Okay, wow! You guys are actually having a meaningful conversation. Don’t mess it up!

SAM
This might sound crazy, but I’m feeling ambitious. We both can’t stand our parents, this town is shit, school is shit too … How would you feel if we just left?

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
Haha—he’s gonna think you’re crazyyyyyy.

PARKER
What do you mean? Like for good?

SAM
For as long as we want. It’d be an adventure.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
Idiot.

PARKER
Ok.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
Wait, what?

SAM
Wait, really?

PARKER
Yeah, why not.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
How is he agreeing to this?

SAM
Okay, wow, do you have a car?

PARKER
Yeah.

SAM
All right, perfect. Let’s get the hell out of here!

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
You’re crazy.

Scene 2

AT RISE: SAM and PARKER get up and start walking to PARKER’S house. All of a sudden it starts to drizzle. PARKER only lives five minutes away, so the walk is not long. They enter the driveway.

PARKER
Okay, don’t be mad, but I actually don’t have a car. It’s my Dad’s.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
See—told you. He probably just wanted to make you look stupid for actually believing him.

SAM
Oh damn, what now?

PARKER
Well, like I said, my dad is a jerk—he doesn’t even work. Honestly, he’s probably taking a nap right now. We could definitely just steal it, and he would have no idea.

(Sam under her breath to SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS.)

SAM
See, he’s not trying to make fun of me! You’re clueless!

PARKER
Sorry, what was that?

SAM
Oh nothing, sorry.

PARKER
Okay. I’ll grab the keys!

(PARKER goes into the house and sees his dad with a beer in his hand, asleep on the couch. The T.V. is on and empty bottles are strewn all over the living room floor. PARKER sneaks into the kitchen, grabs the key off the key ring, picks up his dad’s wallet, then sneaks back outside.”.)

I got it!

SAM
YES! Okay let’s go!

(PARKER runs to the car and starts it relatively fast then turns to SAM.)

PARKER
Are you sure you want to do this? The consequences will be bad.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
Yeah, are you sure?

SAM
Yeah, they might be bad, but staying here another second would be even worse.

PARKER
(In a nervous voice.)

Okay, let’s do this.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
He doesn’t want to go, you’re pressuring him.

SAM
(In a loud serious voice that sounds like SAM is second guessing the whole idea.)
… Okay .

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
You’re so stupid, where are we even going to go? Do you realize how pathetic you are? Imagine if Parker figured out how long you’ve been stalking him, he never would have agreed to this.

(SAM ignores SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS and hastily speaks up.)

SAM
So—where should we go?

PARKER
I have the perfect place.

SAM
Okay.
(Parker drives for five minutes, then proceeds down a narrow dirt road surrounded by woods.)

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
(In a sarcastic tone)

Get ready to die.

SAM
Where are we going? I thought we were skipping town?

PARKER
I want to show you something. Don’t worry, I go here all the time.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
This was not a part of your plan.

SAM
If you say so.

Scene 3
AT RISE: PARKER drives further into the woods until he finally stops at a lake. It is huge and beautiful, and looks like nothing has ever swam in it.

SAM
Whoa—where are we?

PARKER
I come here all the time to collect myself. Here and Trader Vic’s are my favorite places to go when I’m bored or just need some time to think.

SAM
I can see why, it’s beautiful. But why did you take me here?

PARKER
Listen.
(Parker grabs Sam’s hand.)

I know you wanted to go on an adventure somewhere far away, but I wanted to show you it’s possible to have fun in this town, no matter what’s going on at home.

(SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS try getting SAM’s attention by poking her and waving her hands around her. SAM ignores her.)

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
I—I—umm …

SAM
(In a gentle shy voice)

I don’t want to sound rude, but you don’t even know me … why are you being so considerate and nice? I never even slightly thought you would agree to skip town with a random stranger from school.

PARKER
Well, you’re not a complete stranger. I actually have seen you in the cafeteria a few times. To be honest, I always thought you were really pretty but I never had the courage to talk to you.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
He’s just saying this! There’s no way he ever felt nervous. I mean look at you! How could he be nervous to talk to that?

SAM
Wait…what? You? Nervous to talk to me? Literally how? You are one of the most popular guys in our school. Girls are always by your side, practically begging you to give them even your slightest attention. Is this a joke?

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
Yeah, there’s no way he is actually serious.

PARKER
No, I’m serious! You’re intelligent and don’t seem to care about what anyone thinks about you. Most of the girls I’ve dated are super judgmental and superficial, but you—you see what’s underneath the surface. You see what truly matters. I know your home life has been rough, I get it, mine is too, but there are so many places we can go to escape that aren’t miles and miles away.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
You’re none of these things! How would he even know!

SAM
Parker—I have something to tell you. I don’t want you to get freaked out so—wait, how would you know any of this about me if you’ve only seen me a few times in the cafeteria?

PARKER
Yeah, about that … I didn’t want you to think I was a freak, but I’ve seen your blog, and to be honest, Trader Vic’s has only recently become one of my favorite places to go, and, uh, the reason is because I get to see you. I see your posts all the time on how incredible you think their food is, and how you go there practically every day after school. So, I started going so I had an excuse to talk to you. Luckily, you boldly came up to me first.

SAM’S INNER THOUGHTS
H-how is this possible.

SAM
I don’t know what to say, I—me? Like how? Oh my gosh. How embarrassing you saw my blog!

PARKER
No, I love it! You make some very intelligent points that make me question literally everything.

(PARKER smirks. SAM giggles and blushes in embarrassment.)

SAM
Uhh–you must have thought so differently of me when I just walked up to you and asked if you wanted to ditch everything and drive away. What was I thinking?! Honestly, I wasn’t thinking at all. The truth is, I’m in complete shock because ever since I started seeing you at Trader Vic’s, I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind. I haven’t been able to get your face out of my head. I’ve wanted to say hi for weeks so I finally did. I never intended on asking you to go on a road trip, but after talking about our families and how similar they were, it honestly just came out, and then when you said yes, I got all choked up because—

(PARKER quickly kisses SAM on the lips instantly shutting her up.)

PARKER
I guess we’re both crazy for each other. Now—I’d better get the car back before my dad wakes up from his coma.
